The Art of the Apology: an ESL Lesson

To apologize or not to apologize: that is the question. Or at least, that is the ESL lesson.

LEVEL: The lesson plan was created for intermediate English speakers who are eager to increase their conversational skills. It is best suited to CEFR Levels: B1, B2, C1


ABOUT: Cultures around the world have different ways of apologizing, and even the most reticent ESL students will want to share their insights in this lesson. What makes a good apology? When should you apologize? When should you not? Is an apology enough?

ACTIVITIES: Enjoy a range of interesting and entertaining questions and activities.

  • Discuss rich, highly-relevant topics:

    • freedom of speech

    • “cancel culture”

    • triggering

    • disability

    • “toxic masculinity” and self-defense

  • Create humorous “mock apologies” among classmates

  • Practice apology vocabulary

  • Learn the grammar of “my apology” vs. “my apologies.”

  • Explore the differences between “good” apologies and “bad” apologies.
